The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Ranked 1st Among Greek Universities in the “Times Higher Education World University Rankings”

The NKUA ranks 1st among Greek universities in the prestigious “Times Higher Education World University Rankings.”
The results for the 2022-2023 academic year were recently published by Times Higher Education (THE), a division of Elsevier.
Alongside the QS World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (known as the Shanghai List), the THE ranking is among the three most widely recognized and credible global rankings.
For the first time, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) ascended to 1st place among the 16 Greek universities included in this year’s list, while maintaining its global position within the 401-500 range.
According to THE, this year’s rankings include 1,799 universities from 104 countries. Greece has a total of 16 universities represented, with two—NKUA and the University of Crete—ranked among the top 500 globally.
To create this ranking, over 121 million citations across more than 15.5 million research publications were analyzed. Responses from 40,000 academics worldwide were also considered. Altogether, more than 680,000 data points were collected from over 2,500 institutions that submitted information.
Key Findings:
- NKUA and the University of Crete share 1st place among Greek universities, ranking 401-500 globally.
- Harokopio University ranks 2nd in Greece and 501-600 globally.
- Six universities, including Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Athens University of Economics and Business, share 3rd place in Greece, ranking 801-1000 globally.
- The University of Patras and the Technical University of Crete share 4th place, ranking 1001-1200 globally.
- Democritus University of Thrace, the University of Western Macedonia, and the International Hellenic University rank 5th in Greece and 1201-1500 globally.
- The University of West Attica and Hellenic Open University rank 6th in Greece and 1500+ globally.
Notable Highlights for NKUA:
- Research Impact: NKUA leads Greek universities in research impact, with its score improving by 76% since 2016, placing it 276th globally in this criterion.
- Global Standing: Over the 2016-2022 period, NKUA increased its overall score by 31%, solidifying its 1st position among Greek universities.
- Evaluation Criteria: During 2022-2023, NKUA improved its scores in three of the five evaluation criteria compared to the previous year.
- Global Influence: NKUA ranks among the top 15% of universities worldwide for research impact and influence.
